Think and Grow Rich test: Are you annoyed by petty disturbances?

My answers to the Think and Grow Rich Self-Assessment Test

Recently, I was reminded of the self-assessment test in Napoleon Hill’s best-selling book, Think and Grow Rich.

There are fifty-four questions in that test, and I’m going to be giving my answers and thoughts on one or two of them as close to daily as I can manage. I may miss a day here or there, but I’m going to follow through until I reach the end of the test.

I’ve started the series of posts with:

Think and Grow Rich self-assessment test

Question Number 19. Are you annoyed by petty disturbances?

In general, I am not.

In the past, when I lived in an apartment, I would have had to answer differently. I would become annoyed at all kinds of noises I could hear from the surrounding rooms.

Now that I’m living back in the country, about the only thing that annoys me is dogs barking when I’m trying to sleep.

I’ve consciously moved away from other things that used to annoy me. It’s made a big difference.

What about you?

Are you annoyed by petty disturbances?

All the best,

JD

  2. I just realized that I wasn’t thinking about my work environment when I answered the question.

I’ve worked at home for so long that I sometimes forget what it was like at some jobs I used to have.

There were lots of times when my co-workers would annoy me, sometimes for no valid reason I could recognize.

Some folks think I’m a hermit, and I think I fit the description pretty well, but not entirely.

Maybe I’m selfish, but I enjoy social interactions on my terms, not when I’m interrupted by someone else who wants me to interact with them on their terms.

I think that’s one of the major reasons I prefer email to phone calls and meetings.

Sometimes you just have to meet face to face, but I try to keep it to a minimum.

On the other hand, I look forward to visiting with close friends and family in person. I just don’t do a lot of it.

Back to the work environment, I remember something that really used to annoy me. I only worked in a couple of jobs where we had cubicles set up in larger rooms, and it really annoyed me when people would “prairie dog” me.

Have you ever seen prairie dogs? When there is a noise, you’ll see their heads popping out of their tunnels.

In the same way, when something happens in an office with cubicles, people stick their heads up to see what’s going on.

I never could stand it when people would stick their heads up and look over my cubicle walls and interrupt me when I was concentrating on getting something done.

I’ve solved that problem by working alone at home.

    All the best,

    JD

  4. My thoughts on this one alter.

I find that, in general terms, I’m more annoyed these days than I used to be. I think it’s because I’m not around people as much because I’m home more than I used to be. That, plus one gets used to a certain amount of freedom working alone.

However, when I’m on the road, or when I’m in business mode, things roll off my back more easily. It’s an odd conundrum that I’ll figure out one of these days.
